Trump saluted during the singing of the US national anthem and a military airplane flyover.

Some spectators followed that with a chant of "Don-ald Trump" as preparations began for afternoon four-ball (best ball) matches.

Europe seized a 3-1 lead over the United States in morning foursomes (alternate shot) matches.

Trump will see world number one Scottie Scheffler, the reigning PGA Championship and British Open champion, and reigning US Open champion J.J. Spaun begin four-balls against Europe's Jon Rahm and Sepp Straka.

Other four-ball matches will send Americans Bryson DeChambeau and Ben Griffin against Englishmen Justin Rose and Tommy Fleetwood, US stars Justin Thomas and Cam Young against Ludvig Aberg and Rasmus Hojgaard and Americans Sam Burns and Patrick Cantlay against Shane Lowry and world number two Rory McIlroy, who completed a career Grand Slam by winning the Masters.
